“Kill Boksoon” should give viewers a good idea of what to anticipate from this Korean mother-daughter assassin drama. The hitwoman Gil Bok-soon (Jeon Do-yeon), a single mother who now feels distant from her teenage daughter Gil Jae-young (Kim Si-a), goes by the nickname Gil Bok-soon in the film. Additionally, Bok-soon tries to set a good example for Jae-young in the opening scene. Jae-young will never be aware of this battle or understand that her mother did want to be “fair” when she allowed a Japanese mobster to strike her with his preferred weapon (a 400-year-old wakizashi sword).
I think some people may criticize the movie for its stereotype, typical or cliche. But I don’t get the bad reviews criticizing its improbable story or violence. Hey, this is not a suspense nor a drama. It’s a dark black comedy, homage to Tarantino movies. An Asian variation of Kill Bill. Fair ratings should be based on the level of completion of the movie itself, not by the personal preference of special genre.

South Korean action-thriller Kill Boksoon, directed by Byun Sung-hyun and starring Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Si-a, and Sol Kyung-gu, is steeped in drama (or more particularly, K-drama). We follow Gil Bok-soon, a master assassin and mother of a teenage girl (the title of the movie is a play on her name), as she struggles to combine her lethal career with the evolving relationship with her 15-year-old daughter. Bok-soon leads a double life, choosing to conceal her occupation from her daughter Jae-young and maintaining appearances with the other parents at the prestigious private school her daughter attends. She worries that she is starting to see the worst in her kid and that this mirrors how harshly she views her own life.
It has been praised for its visceral fight scenes, a realistic take on motherhood, and choreography. However, some critics think the film is too long and doesn’t have the ability for viewers to connect to the characters.
Sadly, as Boksoon sets off on what she calls her “final” mission, she violates a few regulations involving killing everyone she is assigned to, regardless of the circumstances. As a result, every other hitman working for her organization considers her their number one adversary. Will she stay alive when a group of people trained to kill her comes after her?
